(LifeWire) — Fanny Krieger of San Francisco probably has more fly-fishing tales in her repertoire than Ernest Hemingway.
Krieger, in her late 70s, helped found the Golden West Women Flyfishers — a group that spawned more than 40 other clubs across the country.
Her biggest catch, she says, was a 30-pound brown trout bagged in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, in 2001. She struggled for 30 minutes to win that battle.
The trout “was more in control than I was,” recalled Krieger — an experienced fly-fisher and the wife of noted fly-fishing instructor Mel Krieger.

BOULDER, COLORADO. as three East-Coasters–two from North Carolina–rolled into Colorado and took home the top three spots in the 3-day fish-off. Veteran competitive angler George Daniel, from State College, Pennsylvania, rallied from fourth place on Thursday to earn the individual title, securing himself a spot on the team that will head to the 2008 World Championships in the unbelievably sweet venue of New Zealand.Josh Stevens, from Robbinsville, North Carolina, and Eddie Pinkston, from Asheville, North Carolina, both edged out regional veteran and Boise resident Pete Erickson to earn guaranteed spots on the team. However, it is likely that Erickson and other top finishers will be appointed to the team by the selection committee.
This was the second year that the team was chosen through a competitive selection process, which has been the method other countries have used for years. Though Team USA has never won at the World Championships–now in its 28th year–it did have its best finish ever in 2007, besting powerhouse England for the second time and bringing home sixth place from Finland
Well it is fall on the San Juan, the cotton woods are a bright yellow, and as usual the fishing is great. I have been having good success on gray and cream midges in the morning. After lunch chocolate baetis have been the best. I have caught some fish on gray and olive but most fish are looking for the darker mayflies. If dry fly fishing is your thing this is a great time of year. The midges have been clustering. For some reason they do this more in the fall than any other time of year and the fish know it. A midge cluster pattern will work well. You can also do well in the afternoon with blue winged olives. The mayflies have started and the fish are looking for them. You will do the best around 1:30pm anywhere from t-hole down.
Good luck, Chris
